| I too often hear the following
from people: "I'm not good enough for God to love me."
"I've failed God one too many times and God won't forgive
me again." "I'm being punished by God for my sin."
"My life is so far off what God wants, that God has finally
given up on me."
When things are not going well, when we know the depth of
our sin and our failures we can often become fearful that
our choices are going to be the cause of the removal of God's
loving presence in our lives. I believe we become fearful
and lose hope, because our experience has been that in human
relationships if we sin too many times, then those relationships
become broken, often with the person or persons severing the
relationship.
Scripture proclaims that God's ways are not our ways, and
that God's ways are ways of absolute faithfulness. Scripture
calls us not to base understanding of God on our experience
in human relationships but on the living word of God proclaimed
in Scripture. Truly, when we are faithless, God remains faithful.
Remember, God did not wait until God's people were faithful
before God sent Jesus to save us. If God had waited until
we were faithful, we would still be waiting for Jesus!
